Reflexology for Laryngitis

Definition
Laryngitis is caused by inflammation of the larynx, often resulting in a temporary loss of voice.
Description
When air is breathed in, it passes through the nose and the nasopharynx or through the mouth and the oropharynx. These are both connected to the larynx, a tube made of cartilage. The vocal cords, responsible for setting up the vibrations necessary for speech, are located within the larynx.
Causes & symptoms
Laryngitis is primarily caused by overuse of the voice, a condition faced by people ranging from teachers to performers. Other causes of laryngitis include:
strain on the larynx from talking or singing for long periods
shouting or cheering for an extended time
allergies
colds or cough
smoking
alcohol consumption
atmospheric conditions like dust in the air
anxiety
underactive thyroid
growths on the larynx
However, the primary medical cause of laryngitis is a viral infection. The same viruses that cause the majority of simple colds are responsible for laryngitis. In extremely rare cases, more harmful bacteria or the bacteria that causes tuberculosis (TB) may cause laryngitis. In people with faulty immune systems (like AIDS patients), infections with fungi may be responsible for laryngitis.
Symptoms usually begin with a cold. The person may have a sore, scratchy throat, as well as a fever, runny nose, aches, and fatigue. Difficulty swallowing sometimes occurs, and the patient may have a ticklish cough or wheeze. Most characteristically, the patient suffers voice loss or the voice will sound strained, hoarse, and raspy.
In extremely rare cases, the swelling of the larynx may cause symptoms of airway obstruction. This is more common in infants because the diameter of their airways is so small. In that case, the baby may have a greatly increased respiratory rate and exhibit loud, high-pitched sounds with breathing (called stridor).
Reflexology
Reflexology is a healing method that involves the manipulation of certain parts of the body to bring about balance. For laryngitis, the reflexology focus is on the throat, lung, chest, lymphatic system, and diaphragm points on both feet. Also recommended is manipulation of all points on the sides and bottoms of the toes.

Using Qigong to Treat Arthritis

1. Regulating the Body:
Before you start your Qigong exercises, you should first calm down your mind and use this mind to bring your body into a calm and relaxed state. Naturally, you should always be concerned with your mental and physical centers. Only then will you be able to find your balance. When you have achieved both mental and physical relaxation, centering, and balance, you will be both natural and comfortable. This is the key to regulating your body.
When you relax, you should learn to relax deeply into your internal organs, and especially the muscles that enclose the organs. In addition, you must also place your mind on the joints that are giving you trouble. The more you can bring your mind deep into the joint and relax it, the more Qi will circulate smoothly and freely to repair the damage. Click to learn how Chinese medicine treats Rheumatic Arthritis.
2. Regulating the Breathing:
Breathing is the central strategy in Qigong practice. According to Qigong theory, when you inhale you lead Qi inward and when you exhale you lead Qi outward. This is our natural instinct. For example, when you feel cold in the wintertime, in order to keep from letting the Qi out of your body, you naturally inhale more than you exhale to lead the Qi inward, which also closes the pores in the skin. However, in the summertime when you are too hot you naturally exhale more than inhale in order to lead Qi out of your body. When you do this you start to sweat and the pores open.
In Qigong, you want to lead the Qi to the internal organs and bone marrow, so you must learn how to use inhalation to lead the Qi inward. When you use Qigong to cure your arthritis, you must inhale and exhale deeply and calmly so that you can lead the Qi deep into the joint and also outward to dissipate the excess or stagnant Qi that has accumulated in the joints. Therefore, in addition to relaxing when you practice, you should always remember to inhale and exhale deeply. When you inhale, place your mind deep in the joint, and when you exhale, lead the Qi to the surface of the skin.
3. Regulating the Mind:
In Qigong, the mind is considered the general who directs the battle against sickness. After all, it is your mind that manages all of your thinking and activity. Therefore, a clear, calm mind is very important so that you can judge clearly and accurately. In addition, your attention must also be concentrated. Your mind can generate an EMF (an electromotive force or "voltage") that causes your Qi to circulate. The more you concentrate, the more strongly you can lead the Qi.
When you have a calm and concentrated mind, you will be able to feel and sense the problem correctly. Therefore, when you practice Qigong for your arthritis, you must learn how to bring your mind inward so that you can understand the situation, and you must know how to use your concentrated attention to lead the Qi.
4. Regulating the Qi:
Once you have regulated your body, breathing, and mind, you will be in a good position to start regulating your Qi, and will be able to lead your Qi anywhere in your body in order to make repairs.
5. Regulating the Spirit:
The final key to Qigong is raising your spirit of vitality. Good morale or fighting spirit is necessary to win the struggle against illness. When your spirit is high, your willpower is strong, your mind is firm, and your patience can last a long time. In addition, when your spirit is high your emotions are under control and your wisdom mind can stimulate the Qi to circulate in the body more efficiently. This will significantly reduce the time of healing.

Qigong has been used as an adjuvant treatment of diabetes

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:
Complementary and alternative medicines have been increasingly used as a co adjuvant treatment of chronic diseases, including diabetes mellitus. However, very little is known, especially in western countries, about its effects in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The purpose of this review was to summarize and critically evaluate clinical evidences regarding the effect of Chinese therapeutic exercises (Qigong) in the treatment of T2DM.

METHODS:
A systematic literature review, from January 1992 up to July 2011, searched articles indexed in the MEDLINE, LILACS and QIGONG databases, published in English and Portuguese. Terms combined in a Boolean search were "Qigong", "Chikung" "qi-gong" "diabetes" and "glycemic control". Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane criteria. Click to learn how Chinese medicine treats Diabetes.

RESULTS:
Out of 30 English written articles, 5 studies met the inclusion criteria. Their results suggested favorable effects of Qigong in reducing C-peptide and fasting blood glucose levels in addition of improving insulin resistance and glycosilated hemoglobin.

CONCLUSIONS:
The few studies, written in English, available on this subject had a somewhat limited methodological quality preventing definitive conclusions about the efficacy of Qigong Chinese exercises in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. There is a need of large randomized clinical trials to prove the effectiveness of this modality of therapy, as well as the need for more research papers written in English in order to disseminate and expand the potential benefit of this therapy in the management of T2DM.

Health Benefits of Practising Taiji

One of the main reasons that Taiji is so widely practiced in China is that it promotes a long and healthy life. The Taoists practiced a form of Taiji in their quest for eternal youth, and the doctor Sun Simiao, known throughout the Chinese world as the Medicine King, lived to the ripe old age of 100, conscientiously carrying out the forms. He recommended it as an excellent way of maintaining good health, urging his patients to learn perseverance and patience from the steady progress they made with Taiji. Click here to learn Spring Conjunctivitis in TCM.
Taiji is also a safe and practical sport. There is no risk of acute cardiac problems when practicing, and it is an excellent all-round healthy activity. Because of its balanced yet cyclical nature, there are no sudden movements or jolts to shock weak joints or muscles, the movement is gentle and constant, with no stops or starts. Breathing is kept slow and regular throughout the form, instead of forcing participants to gasp for breath or stop for a rest. It is extremely practical in that no special equipment or dedicated space is required – comfortable loose clothing is all you need, and a little time regularly. You can keep up Taiji even when you are away from home.
This activity can also improve general coordination, flexibility and mobility. This is especially true for older people. Regular Taiji sessions will strengthen the leg and back muscles reducing the likelihood of falls and injuries, giving more independence. Arthritis can be eased with regular practice, as Taiji can help strengthen the muscles around the affected joints, encouraging flexibility and enlarging the range of movements in a gentle, painless way. Taiji is suitable for all ages, irrespective of gender, physical condition or strength and ability. Like Yoga, those practicing Taiji go at their own pace without forcing any movements, each level providing room for improvement. Click here to learn Senile Cataract in TCM.
Taiji is fun and can be practiced alone or in a group, to soft music or in silence, indoors or out. The importance of enjoyable activity cannot be overstressed-relaxation and enjoyment are as important in life as work and study. The trick is to get the balance right - too much work makes Jack a dull boy! Even we in the west know that a healthy body means a healthy mind, and that happiness plays a major role in our health. And when it is practiced in a group, all the advantages of socialization and personal interaction are at play and the activity becomes something to look forward to. So Taiji can simply be practiced for fun, too, and to meet people. Finally, Taiji can provide positive treatment for many serious illnesses.
According to the WHO, the main killers of our society are now cancer, heart diseases, brain diseases and diabetes. Taiji and TCM can be beneficial in the treatment of all of these. In TCM, cancer is believed to be caused by a deficiency of some kind, and tonic herbs such as Ginseng and Lingzhi (ganoderma mushroom) are usually prescribed. In Taiji, cancer is thought of as grains of sand in the muscles, and the gentle, smooth movements can help to ease them slowly out of the system. The cardiovascular system can benefit greatly from the practice of Taiji, as this activity promotes overall circulation of blood. The leg muscles are worked extensively, thereby reducing the risk of blood clots or other problems affecting the extremities, and the overall benefit is that blood and oxygen are directed more regularly to the brain. In TCM, brain and heart problems are often treated with Danshen, in tea, powder or tablet form.
Diseases of the blood can be slowed down with certain teas: Jiangzhi tea for reducing cholesterol, Jiangtang tea for lowering blood sugar levels, and Jiangya for blood pressure. Regular Taiji sessions have been proven highly effective for improving the heart rate, especially for normally sedentary elderly people, and for reducing blood pressure by decreasing stress. The immune system can also be improved with Taiji.
As with TCM, Taiji works the body and mind as a whole, seeking to rebalance Yin and Yang. Where TCM treats with herbs, massage and acupuncture, Taiji work with movement. Both offer genuine health benefits.
