TCM herbs provide powerful protection against liver cancer

More than 10 percent of the world's population currently suffers from some form of liver disease, whether it be fibrosis, cirrhosis, a hepatocellular carcinoma, alcoholic steatosis, or chronic hepatitis. And a great number of these folks use some kind of natural remedy as treatment rather than pharmaceuticals, according to a 2012 study published in the European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.

Herbal remedies have gained an incredible following among liver disease sufferers, because they're safe and highly effective, without all the harmful side effects. According to the paper, the following herbs and herb-derived remedies are among the top contenders in this natural fight against liver disease:
1) Curcumin (Curcuma longa). This turmeric derivative has been used throughout Southeast Asia as a remedy for rheumatism, skin diseases, body aches, intestinal worms, diarrhea and hepatic disorders. More recently, curcumin has shown scientific benefits in treating inflammatory diseases like Diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, dementia and cancer.

"Curcumin could attenuate liver injury induced by ethanol [alcohol], thioacetamide, iron overdose, cholestasis and acute, subchronic and chronic carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) intoxication," explains the paper. "[M]oreover, it can reverse CCl4 cirrhosis to some extent."

2) Wogonin (Scutellaria radix). This monoflavonoid compound isolated from skullcap root shows incredible promise in the treatment of both Hepatitis B and C, as well as various forms of alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Unlike pharmaceuticals, wogonin doesn't promote drug resistance, nor does it induce adverse events in patients.

"The anti-HBV activity of wogonin demonstrates its ability to suppress hepatitis B surface antigen secretion in cell culture," the study highlights, noting that wogonin has also been shown to be effective in treating hepatocellular carcinoma cells.
3) Glycyrrhizin (Glycyrrhiza glabra). This active constituent of licorice root has long been used in the treatment of Chronic Hepatitis, and also possesses a host of natural anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. Glycyrrhizin is used in traditional Chinese medicine to protect liver function and also to combat tumors.

4) Resveratrol. This polyphenolic phytochemical derived from berries, grapes and wine, has gained itself a solid reputation as one of the most potent anti-aging compounds found in nature. But resveratrol has also been shown scientifically to have hepatoprotective properties that may help protect against hepatic damage caused by free radicals and inflammatory cytokines. It also helps elevate levels of glutathione in the body and promote the formation of antioxidant enzymes, both of which help protect the liver.

5) Silymarin (Silybum marianum). This compound derived from milk thistle is arguably the most well-studied in the natural treatment of liver disease. Milk thistle extract has long held a strong reputation as one of the most powerful "liver tonics" in the world, due to its amazing ability to prevent and/or reverse hepatotoxicity caused by drugs and other toxins. Silymarin also helps combat the production of free radicals, as well as exerting antifibrotic activity that helps protect the liver against toxic damage

Many of the traditional Chinese herbs used to treat ADHD

There are numerous alternative treatments for ADHD - some more effective than others. Chinese herbal medicine has roots that go back thousands of years. Surprisingly enough, when modern studies test many of the traditional Chinese herbs used to treat ADHD and other medical conditions, the studies find that the Chinese treatment methods are highly effective at treating the condition they are designed to cure.

Find out how the following six Chinese herbs are beneficial in treating both children and adults with ADHD:
Thorowax root
Thorowax root has cell-stimulating, anti-inflammatory, and sedative effects. When used to treat ADHD, the sedative effects of the herbs can help control impulsive behavior and prevent hyperactivity. The sedative effects are extremely mild, and provide just enough sedation to benefit Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) - not remove all personality from the child or adult taking the herb.

Oriental ginseng
Ginseng is an herb known for its concentration-boosting effects, which is why many memory-boosting supplements contain ginseng. Ginseng also increases endurance and relieves stress. The herb is known for its ability to improve oxygen flow to the brain, which encourages normal brain development. As some children with ADHD have a developmental delay of about three years, this is an effective herb for treating ADHD.
Skullcap root
Skullcap root is an herb that protects the nervous system. In many children with ADHD, the balance of the chemicals in the brain controlling the nervous system is off. Skullcap root can help retain the normal balance of chemicals in the brain. Skullcap root is particularly helpful for preventing hyperactivity and calming the nerves.

Red jujube
The jujube has many helpful properties, but for ADHD, the herb is more effective for calming the nerves and mind and creating a peaceful effect in the body.

Ginkgo biloba
Ginkgo biloba is an herb that is known for its ability to boost cognitive function in the brain. Ginkgo increases the amine neurotransmitter substances in the brain, which helps counteract some of the chemical deficiencies often seen in children with ADHD. Ginkgo can calm the mind and promote a peaceful spirit.

Poria
Poria has many benefits, including improving digestion and soothing the nerves. Many children with ADHD have poor digestion, and supplementing with poria can improve the health of the intestines and promote the elimination of toxins that can contribute to ADHD symptoms.

Acupuncture to be more effective in treating pain than morphine

Acupuncture is an age-old traditional Chinese practice in which practitioners stimulate specific trigger points on the body by inserting thin needles through the skin. In Asia, acupuncture has been used for centuries to treat back, knee, and neck pain, osteoarthritis, headaches, and many other medical conditions. Today researchers are slowly unraveling what benefits acupuncture can have on our overall health.

According to new research, published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine, acupuncture may be more efficient in the management of pain than intravenous morphine. Furthermore, the study reported that acupuncture can work faster in relieving pain and with no adverse health effects. When performed by an experienced, well-trained practitioner using sterile needles, acupuncture is generally well-tolerated and considered safe for most people.

The dark side of morphine use
People suffering chronic pain are usually prescribed morphine or morphine-like prescription drugs. These opioid pain medications are highly addictive and can have severe adverse health effects. Next to being highly addictive, morphine-based drugs can cause drowsiness, dizziness, Constipation, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, Headache, tired feeling, anxiety, and mild itching.

Furthermore, a research team from the University of Colorado-Boulder reported that they may actually worsen chronic pain instead of treating it. As reported by Waking Times, prescription painkillers have been responsible for more than 183,000 deaths over the last 15 years.

Even though there are several holistic alternatives available to treat chronic pain, doctors keep prescribing these health-damaging drugs to the majority of pain sufferers. Current evidence suggests acupuncture is one of the most effective holistic treatments to combat pain. It might even be more effective than morphine, according to the researchers from the Fattaouma Bourguiba University Hospital in Tunisia.

Acupuncture versus Big Pharma
For their study, the research team evaluated 300 emergency patients. Of these 300 patients, 150 were administered up to 15 milligrams of morphine per day while the other 150 people were treated with acupuncture to manage their pain.
The team concluded that there was a significant difference in pain reduction between the two groups. The acupuncture group experienced greater pain reduction. Furthermore, the researcher reported that the effect occurred faster and with fewer side effects compared to the morphine group.

This is not the first time acupuncture has been associated with better health and pain reduction. In 1996, acupuncture became an accepted form of medical treatment, officially recognized by some governments throughout the world. Nonetheless, harmful prescription medication is for many pain sufferers still the way they choose to manage their chronic aches and pain.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), conditions for which acupuncture has been proven to be an effective treatment include adverse reactions to radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy, Allergic Rhinitis, biliary colic, depression, dysentery, nausea, morning sickness, hypertension, headaches, Sciatica and lower back, knee, and neck pain.

As you can see, acupuncture can play a crucial role in pain management. It works better than morphine, one of the strongest painkillers out there, making it an effective drug-free alternative to health-damaging prescription drugs.

If you, or one of your loved ones, suffers from chronic pain, instead of relying on money-generating, addictive medications why not give this ancient, time-tested, natural practice your trust?

Herbs to boost immune system and prevent us from infection

The human immune system is a remarkable network of biological structures and processes. When functioning properly, it has the ability to remember diseases that it has previously encountered for more efficient removal, trigger immediate responses to emergencies through its advanced communication systems and much more.
Despite its sophistication, however, the immune system is notoriously fragile, and even the healthiest of us can suffer from compromised immunity from time to time. During these difficult periods, when we're at a far greater risk of infection than usual, it is a good idea to supplement our diets with herbs that are well-known for their immune-boosting properties. Three of the best of these herbs are listed below.

Astragalus
Astragalus is a perennial plant native to the northern and eastern regions of China, as well as Korea and Mongolia. Its antioxidant-rich root, which resembles a garlic bulb, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to strengthen the body against disease. Moreover, Astragalus's adaptogenic qualities make it effective at fighting disease as well.

Astragalus has been well-studied in the West, and numerous studies confirm its alleged immunity-boosting properties. A study published in Cellular Immunology in 2011, for instance, found that Astragalus polysaccharides could stimulate the body's production of macrophages (white blood cells that tackle foreign invaders and cancer cells). A later study, published in Microbial Pathogenesis in January 2014, also discovered that Astragalus polysaccharides could regulate the production of T cells (white blood cells that defend the body from pathogens) in infected mice.

Echinacea
Echinacea is a flowering plant that grows throughout North America and Europe. It was immensely popular in its native lands as an immunity booster and general "cure-all" during the 18th and 19th centuries, but its use began to decline after the advent of antibiotics. Fortunately, the West -- prompted by growing research into its health benefits -- seems to have rediscovered Echinacea in recent decades.

Studies into Echinacea's immunity-boosting properties are considerable, and new research is being published every month. For example, a study featured in International Immunopharmacology in March 2014 found that Echinacea polysaccharides could regulate T cell cytokine response, thus enhancing the body's defenses against infection. These results were reinforced by another study published one month later in Natural Product Communications, which concluded that Echinacea preparations can bolster immunity by decreasing the "number and function" of regulatory T cells.

Cat's claw
Cat's claw is a woody vine native to the Amazon Rainforest of South America. While the indigenous people of Central and South America have used cat's claw -- which is named after its hook-like thorns -- to treat a wide variety of medical conditions, it is especially revered for its ability to strengthen immune function.

Few studies have been conducted on cat's claw compared to Astragalus and Echinacea, but the limited amount of research we currently possess is promising. A study published in Phytotherapy Research in August 2011, for example, discovered that cat's claw extracts could boost immunity by modulating "distinct patterns of the immune system in a dose-dependent manner."  A study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food in March 2007 also listed cat's claw as one of three herbs (the others being saw palmetto and Echinacea) that could regulate immune function by activating disease-fighting macrophages.

How to combat blood pressure with Chinese medicine herbs

Controlling blood pressure with herbs is an important option, considering that one in four people in the United States suffers from high blood pressure. Many lose their lives to this silent killer every year. It is one of the leading contributors to heart disease and is not always obvious. It is exacerbated by unhealthy living, smoking, fatty foods, excessive drinking and stress. High intake of salt and other products contributes to the problem.

Avoid Covering the Problem:
The use of herbs to control High Blood Pressure aids in reducing High Cholesterol and helps blood flow. Using natural methods to control blood pressure is best for the body. Most drugs only cover up the problem, encouraging the body to build up a resistance. Herbs are natural foods giving the body nutrients, solving the nutritional factor that may be feeding the blood pressure problem. Garlic is one of those herbs. People jokingly say garlic is a repellant of friends and other objects, but garlic keeps an abundance of unwanted health problems away from the body.

Herbs Detoxify:
Use herbs to detox the body. A huge problem with blood flow is inflammation. Once this problem is solved, the body can get necessary vitamins to affected areas. When preparing foods, include more onions, peppers and spices. These herbs are beneficial to the body. Basil, oregano and cinnamon are also helpful. Blend these herbs into as many dishes as possible and reduce salt and sugar intake. Too many foods are prepackaged with these products, so read labels.

Reduce the Inflammation:
Cardamom, olives and ginger work great, reducing inflammation in the body, bringing down blood pressure. Turmeric, hawthorn and celery seed aid in this process. People with a healthy diet of vegetables have far less trouble with blood pressure than most. This shows that eating a large amount of vegetables is a way of getting a variety of nutrients also found in herbs into the body. It is not enough to know about helpful herbs; use them for better health.

Herbs used for seasonings are basic to many kitchen cupboards: rosemary, elderberry, lemon balm and many others. Chamomile is popular as a soothing tea. Some herbs are more common than others and should be taken sparingly. Everyone responds differently. For example, garlic is good for the body; it is a natural antibiotic, but it is also a blood thinner and should not be eaten excessively.
Herbs are one of the least expensive foods on the market. They can be grown on a kitchen window seal or in a few flowerpots in a favorite sitting area. Thousands of people use grow lights to keep herb gardens when living in apartments, and others use small greenhouses available at local garden shops to grow herbs year round. Many neighborhoods have rooftop gardens or community gardens that satisfy the need for potent herbs. These plants are helpful to the body, and they can be acquired no matter how tight the budget, with a little effort. They are also fun and simple to grow.

Traditional Chinese herbs to help lower high blood pressure

High Blood Pressure – also known as Hypertension – is a very common problem here in America. It has also been nicknamed the “silent killer” because, although it very rarely has any signs or symptoms associated with it, it is a major risk factor for heart attacks and strokes. Because it is such a common issue, there are many prescription medications available to help treat it. But all of these medications come with an array of side effects which range from dizziness upon standing to electrolyte imbalances to damage to the kidneys. That is why so many people are becoming interested in natural ways to treat high blood pressure that do not come with these added risks. Below, some of the herbs which have been used historically to treat hypertension without the use of prescription drugs are discussed in more detail.
Basil
Mediterranean countries like Italy, as a whole, have lower rates of hypertension than the United States or even other countries in different parts of Europe. This may in part be due to high consumption of basil, which has been shown to lower blood pressure in several studies and which can be added easily to soups, stews, pasta dishes and fresh salads.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon has gained a lot of attention in the media in recent years because of its apparent ability to help diabetics control their blood sugar levels. However, several of these studies found that in addition to lowering the overall blood sugar levels of these diabetic patients, cinnamon had the ability to lower their blood pressure as well.
Cardamom
Cardamom is an incredibly popular spice in India and other parts of Southeast Asia. While not as widely used in the United States, people are becoming more familiar with it here because of its use in chai tea. This is just as well, because apparently this spice has positive effects on blood pressure, too, and in one study, those who consumed it on a regular basis saw a significant improvement in their hypertension.
Garlic
Garlic has long been touted as a great supporter of cardiac health. One of the reasons for this is that garlic contains active compounds that are able to relax the muscles around the arteries and allow those vessels to expand, thus lowering blood pressure as well as the risk of a heart attack or stroke. It should be consumed raw to get the full benefit, however.
In short, if hypertension is a problem, there are many herbal-based remedies to choose. These herbs and spices can be added easily into many dishes that people are already eating. And what’s even better, they can lower blood pressure levels naturally – and, more importantly, avoid the unpleasant or even dangerous side effects of prescription drugs.
